A new layout and a special panel to highlight what's new that comes with this new look. I hope you will enjoy these new features & stuff!
You as a reader can now rate the review you're reading! Yes, like we the reviewers rate the production title, you now can rate our review. If you feel it is badly written, give it the lowest rate. If it is the most informative and very well written, you can give it a max 5 star rating. Be honest now! Just because we diss your favourite star doesn't mean we deserve nothing & just because we lavish praises doesn't mean we should get 5. Rate us because you feel it is well written, structural wise and on how much info you could get from that review.

For those who hates writing full length review and yet wants to comment on a title without having to post it in some other review, you can now write your own short reviews! All short reviews will be collected and combined into one special page with Opinion as the indicator. It is not a form but a comments type page so you can always delete your comments and rewrite a new one. Check out the links in all reviews section under the big green title, SHORT REVIEWS POST HERE.

Check out Funn In Second Life, my avatar, Funn Jewell's own blog on her travels, her fashion mishaps & many more tales from Second Life.

Dumb, dumber, dumbest - world news at a glance
Permanent link  Post a Comment  1 comments

I hardly talk about politics, well not like every hour and every day. But sometimes I come across some impossible not to comment news not because they're great but most often time because it just defies logic. I read The Star Newspaper everyday for local and world news and Mail Online for some more World News, or rather British news.

Whilst I was going through Mail Online, I came across this headline;

"The desperate Romanian rape victim, 11, who wants a last minute abortion in Britian". Read the news proper and I was just dumbfounded by how stupid the Romanian authorities are. This girl, now 20 weeks pregnant can no longer have a legal abortion in Romania who only allow up to 14 weeks. So she can go to Britain which is max 24 weeks. But she needs permission. In Romania they denied her a latr abortion and now they're considering whether to allow her to go to Britian for an abortion. The fact that they need to consider is stupid. She was raped by her teenage uncle, now on the run. The reason the Romanian authorities need to consider her case instead of a straight yes? "The National Doctors Council, however, said the rights of the foetus should be considered and the pregnancy should go ahead.". Well all the pressure worked because I just checked the news again and the authorities allow her to go to Britain. Finally, after probably days or even weeks of trauma to the poor girl. If they don't allow, I wonder, who will take care of the child? Do you see pro-lifes adopting the kid? I doubt it.

Then I saw this headline; "Schoolboy found hanged after his father confiscated his new Wii". 13 year old described as sensitive, witty and intelligent hanged himself after his father refused to let him play the computer game when he wanted to as his sister was watching the TV. He ran up to his own room, threw a super temper tantrum and then hanged himself with his necktie. His father wanted to scold him only to find him dead. I was watching Saving Private Ryan the other day, watching so many young men die for a good cause, Band of Brothers I saw the concentration camps and Jews hoping just to cling on to hope for survival and here is this 13 year old kid, hanging himself over a computer game or rather the fact his father said NO to him. If like this also cannot tahan, how to tahan the pressures of real life? I mean I have every reason to kill myself then, every single minute. Work, lack of money, high petrol prices, can't afford this and don't even have a Wii console. In fact yesterday Star Newspaper printed the news of a husband of 4 (very young) who killed himself after he bet and lost RM90,000-00 in the Euro Championship game. Now that is a good reason to off yourself isn't it? Owing so much money to Ah Longs. I have little sympathy for him and even less sympathy for this kid. Imagine that!13 year old, dead over a Wii. All year I read about 12 year old, 15 year old hanging themselves over poor school results. Then I read about young people being bullied to their death in England or how one girl killed herself because she was rejected online by a "boy" who turned out to be mother of her schoolmate! What sense can you make of these?

And every year, like clockwork, in Malaysia we will repeat 3 main discussions;

1. why top students who are non Malays could not get a government scholarship or get into local University. Every year.

2. Should we even publish top students' results since this would hurt and discourage the not so high achievers. Re those who killed themselves. Every year also. My answer? Why deny the top achievers their glory?

And

3. Every 6 months or so, discussion why women in Malaysra are raped and how to curb rapists which will inadvertantly lead to ministers or public giving dumb views like "oh the dress causes it!" or "the white sheer quality of the school uniform encouraged it" or now "lipstick and make up is a factor". I want to talk about this.

Yes, the school uniform is sheer white, more so lower income group can't afford good material and uses the same shirt year in year out so imagine how sheer it can be. But we wear pinafores. The sheerness issue is with the Malay baju kurung. Reality check; some girls like to be noticed, which is why they wear pink bras inside without singlets. Some are modest so they wear tan bra plus singlets inside. Another reality check; when I was younger we used to have PE classes in the fields next to the school. That was when we are required to wear white shirt with dark blue ermm jumper is that what you call those pants? Anyway even then I feel kinda exposed. Why white? I agree with some comments about the sheerness issue but again the fault is not with the wearer but school policy and the public who rapes. Anyway there we were exercising and guess what? A bunch of young men (in England they would have been called yobs) stood by the bus stop and just stared at us. Do away with white. Maybe dark grey please? Required uniform must include singlet? I am not saying anything but some of us do openly seek attention, but the problem is we often mistake open disrespectful stares as admiration and adulation. We were too young then. Now that we are older perhaps we can explain that to the young ones. But why is the girl being raped being blamed for it because she was wearing school standard issued white blouse?

And now make up. Oh my god. I love my blusher and lipstick. So am I asking for it? One reader in The Star wrote his unhappiness over the whole why men rape issue under the headline "Stupid excuses touted as cause of rape" (The Star, Views, 27.06.2008). Quite agree with what he wrote up until he wrote this mind blowingly irresponsible opinion; "Rape is caused by a desire due to mental illness or frustration". Sorry if I sound rude but WHAT? Desire? Maybe. Mental illness? Frustration? Can I murder because I am fed up? Don't give these scums a defense. If everything is mental illness, like watching porn, eating meat, raping people are what is crazy, the nut house at Tanjung Rambutan would require an immediate expansion into Tanjung Durian I tell you. Sometimes we can have the right intention but just the dumbest conclusion. Why people rape? Maybe desire but serial rapists are rather compulsion. Maybe you're right to say they can't help it but if you look at a wider scale, people rape to exert control. Usually they have little control in their own mundane daily lives so they rape to show how they are in control. Like those robbers who rob houses and drag the teenaged daughter into the room and rape her. Mental illness? Frustration? Hardly. So Malaysia is now in the forefront trying to answer the age old question, at least in Malaysia. Why men rape? Can we curb it? If yes, how? Well ask Quantico then. Maybe they know. What I do know is some rapists rape children (were they wearing sexy clothes?), old people (make up perhaps?) and classic case of all, a nun. A nun. Tell me, a nun, sexy clothes? Make up? Lingerie? Dumb, stupid, idiotic observations and often perpetrated by our own elected stupid ministers whether government or opposition. And they think dictating how we wear our hair, clothes and make up will curb the men's desire. Why women are blamed? Can't men wear chastity belts as suggested by the reader? Can't men castrate themselves? Buy some chemical and pump it into his genitals when he feels the urge, like they say the desire? Or better yet, can they just hang themselves for the good of mankind? How do you prevent rape? Destroy all porn? Will that help? Be more religious? Whip them more? Death penalty perhaps? I like that idea. Death to those repeat offenders, and I mean child rapists. Life and extra whipping for everybody else. Why not?

Well, this headline from the Star Newspaper world news section is perhaps the stupidest of all news I have read today;

"No death for those who rape children : Sentence is too severe, says US Supreme Court".

In America, where rights of criminals seem to outweighs everybody. First can't torture terrorists, then can't deny rights of criminals, now can even punish child rapists to death because... too severe? They said " In terms of moral depravity and of the injury to the person and to the public, they cannot be compared to murder in their severity and irrevocability". Tell that to Austrian woman trapped for more than 20 years and raped repeatedly by her own father. Tell that to those young children, boys and girls sexually abused by prominent people for decades in the horror house. Tell that to every young children who was raped but of course didn't die. How merciful of these rapists not to kill them eh? The death penalty was under review in the state of Lousiana I suppose filed by the convicted rapists of an 8 year old and 5 year old girls, I think one of them a stepdaughter. Both McCain and Obama opposed this ruling. I am sure general public would too. We are not talking about rape as in rape. I mean rape is already devastating, but on a child as young as 6 and sometimes to babies too, tell me, isn't that devastating AND morally depraved? What possible sexual attraction can one have on a mere child if not the fact that his brain although not insane but is wired differently and is of course a paedophile? How can a rape on a child not be morally depraved? Are we living in such a morally corrupt society that we dare lower down the impact of a child rape? Sometimes murders are justified. That is a fact. Provoked, bullied, self defence, frustration, etc but rape? Since when rape is ever justified? "She made me angry so I rape her?" Didn't you mean slap her? Sometimes violence is justified. I mean "yeung sui" is my standard nowadays. I mean some crime even murder has justification however much you disagree with me but rape is one of the crimes that defies justification. No, I think I shouldn't say defies, I should say does not in any situation justify a justification. Not morally depraved as murder simply because the child lived? How dumb is that. What if he raped the girl to the point she can't have children in future? What if he tortured the girl? What if he raped her repeatedly? What if he did it again and again and again under the nose of the mother who in all classic case didn't know? He will rape again if he is released. Is he whipped? Please do. Life sentence? Usually out in a decade. He goes on to rape again. The child probably need years of therapy. Who will pay? The rapist?

US supreme court is beginning to sound rather annoying to me. Too much rights have been given to prisoners. Cable TV, magazines, books, conjugal visits, shortened sentence, go out and work and then come back to prison! One day, air cond in every cell. Sometimes ordinary people don't even have access to Cable TV and here, a man raped, murdered, robbed, kicked, beaten, cheated, they all have access to Cable TV. The joke is on the innocent public.

What more can I say? The news are getting more like gossips than real news. Opinions are becoming more stupid than being really what matters. A criminal has more rights than ordinary folks.

Oh and guess what? These past fews days I have been reading in Britain how soldiers disfigured or even disabled in the war in Iraq being compensated significantly less (like less than half) than a transgendered soldier whose feeling was hurt by being sidelined or whatever. Tell me, what is the logic when how you feel is worth more than how badly injured physically? It's like saying feelings about physical aspect. People are more scared of being sued for libel and defamation than sayyyyyy knocking down a guy who became disabled because chances are, defamation and libel will cause you more than simply knocking down a guy. So before you consider saying "Funn, you're stupid" or "Funn, you're fat" or better yet, "Funn, you're a fatty stupid moronic idiotic fool of a weaker sex", you might as well run me down than say those things. Because then you need not compensate me millions for hurting my vulnerable feelings and just a few hundred thousands for effectively shutting me up physically.

Mind you, I am very sensitive person. You never know how much your words can hurt me. Oh please don't, I just read a negative comment on my review. I feel so hurt. I want to cry. And I better consult my lawyer now. Oh damn it! I don't live in Britain or America. I should consider migrating since I am such a sensitive soul, I may be the first millionaire by investing in my feelings; that is suing those who dares to hurt me. Let me cry myself a river first.

The people at Emmys hates Life
Permanent link  Post a Comment  1 comments

I just saw the list of nominees for the Emmys for top 10 drama

Boston Legal
Damages
Dexter
Friday Night Lights
Grey’s Anatomy
House
Lost
Mad Men
The Tudors
The Wire

I was seriously shocked to see Life isn't in the list. Boston Legal? Trashy. Damages? One story and it is getting OTT and boring. The Tudors? Yes, sex sells. Grey's Anatomy? Boring, tiring, repetetive and how many times can a doctor sleep with everybody else and pine for someone else? I thought Life deserves to be top 10, if not top 5. Lost and House are 2 series that deserves to win. If you're wondering why not Ugly Betty and Pushing Daisies? Well they're in the comedy list.

What then do you expect from Emmys? They're traditionally too traditional, sticking only to the same old, same old. If Helen Hunt or NYPD Blue or even Sopranos did not retire, let me tell you everybody else would have no chance at all. Golden Globes seem to be the better one, after all Hugh Laurie won his award for best actor there I think.

What unjustness to such a great series like Life. Grey's Anatomy my foot.

And Hugh Laurie better win the Best Actor for drama and Damian Lewis and Sarah Shahi better be nominated if not win also. If not watching Emmys is pretty pointless since they're so out of touch with the common folks. The Internet is buzzing with discussions on these 2 series itself. Boring tiring repetetive Emmys. Why I even bother to post about the Emmys is a mystery to me.

 Hugh Laurie, simply perfection
Permanent link  Post a Comment  1 comments

Not only can this specimen of a perfect being can act, he can sing, he can play the piano and he can convey all these with witty sense of humour and having read one of his articles some time ago, he can also write and express himself with such faultless humour. What more can't Hugh Laurie do? He can box also! I am pretty sure he can also dance. Perfection.

English actors are very well rounded. Most could sing even if they aren't singers and they can act really well. Christian Bale proved that, Damian Lewis also can act, dance AND sing all at the same time, Hugh Grant I am sure can at least sing eventhough dancing maybe not and who else? Daniel Craig can sing, maybe dance a little and can damn well act. Can any of them play musical instruments? Maybe not all but I won't be surprised they can at least play the bongos. Ben Kingsley? Can he do all that? What great talent pool.

And since Dark Knight is coming out next month, my obsession with Christian Bale will start all over again. Right now Daniel Craig is still my obsession, Damian Lewis my current obsession thanks to the series Life and of course Hugh Laurie. House MD season 4 is even better than all previous seasons.

What can this perfect being with perfect blue eyes (which I try to achieve through my avatar, Funn Jewell's eyes (a combination of Hugh Laurie and Daniel Craig's eyes) can't do? TELL ME! I need to know he is NOT perfect!

 So ermm, what d'ya think?
Permanent link  Post a Comment  3 comments

I am a tad disappointed there's an acute lack of feedback on the layout for FISL except for if my memories serve me right, 1. Kinda put a lot of effort in it and yet I haven't heard of any feedback. I mean not on the contents but the looks, the arrangement. No "wow!" and so far amazingly no "it sucks!". So I am wondering, really no one bothers?

This is scaring me a little. You know I like to please. Now before you go "yeah, right!", it's true when it comes to the look and feel. I am creating a similar concept for this very blog, but instead of pop up windows, I am making it open within this page itself. I have contemplated pop up windows to contain the look of it or even create a separate text based alternative like this present one on top of the new look but it is much too much hassle. I don't want to cut off the 6 people. I am in a dilemma. Is this what artistes feel when they feel they're stuck between what they want to do and what they think everybody else wants them to do?

As for why 6, yesterday a record high. I saw the statistics there, 7 viewing the page, one of whom is me. So instead of 5, now there's 6. That's an improvement for me.

 Updates - Episodic Thoughts
Permanent link  Post a Comment  0 comments

Well actually semi episodic thoughts. I am watching Royal Tramp aka Duke Of Mount Deer 2008 right now and there are quite a few opinion I wished to express so I thought better get it out of my system now. This is not an episode by episode review but depending on how many episodes I have seen, I will write for that group of episodes. Since everyone is familiar with the story (after 3 versions plus a movie version as well who doesn't?) I will go straight to my comments with a bit on the plot itself. Since it is a few episodes grouped together it can get pretty long and yes I do repeat myself as always. And rather crude as well since I don't have much time nor the pleasure of viewing the entire series to formulate a coherent elegant prose. As I am not familar with the names, actors as well as the China Mandarin, there may be times I am just unable to describe certain stuff. If you can correct me or fill in the blanks that would be nice. I am writing in comparison in particular to the Jordan Chan and Dicky Cheung version, not the books or Tony Leung or even Stephen Chow versions so don't be too alarmed if I kept comparing the version. I would appreciate if anyone can compare between book and versions? That would be great for discussion as I often wondered which version is the most faithful and does Wai Siu Bo in the end know like great kung fu? I remember correctly Dicky Cheung's version had that and I was fuming and well let us ignore Stephen Chow's version shall we?

Anyway, do bookmark the blog. Since I don't have much time, I am just using Blogspot. The 1st 3 episodes is not quite finished yet in terms of some pictures because my connection is slow. Will complete it later. The text is complete.

Official reopening of Funn In Second Life
Permanent link  Post a Comment  0 comments

Now known simply as FISL because Funn In Second Life is too long. I am so proud of myself. I achieved the look I wanted without using Flash although it is only for screen resolution of 1024 X 768 which according to my counter statistics is this site's most popular resolution. Even if isn't, I hope you will just resize the resolution to view this fantastic looking site. I checked in Flock, IE and even Firefox. All looks like how it should be. Loading the site in a pop up window as intended at the gateway makes the while laptop on the table thing even more awesome. I don't have a laptop, no Iphone and I certainly don't look like Funn Jewell but I'll be damn! The whole things looks like how it may have been on my table although the postits are a bit too big for realism. All these were achieved using Photoshop and Dreamweaver and the coding by Frontpage. I will be actively updating the site since I have been storing articles and I hope you will love the layout (loads pretty fast considering it is graphic based) and the articles!

>> The gateway to FISL (click that link there, and a pop up window will load what would be my future worktable).

IMPORTANT
I don't know why but when in that pop up window, some links meant to be opened in a new window somehow got an error notice that the link is invalid and yet ignore that notice, it still loads. So if such is the encounter, ignore the warning until I find a better pop up window code. Further, I have deleted all new window codes and just make all links open in the same laptop window even if outside link until I fix this. I hate my laptop being pushed further down by those stupid bars on top eventhough I switched it off!

I will be adopting more or less the same layout for this site, except it will be paper based and no worries since more than 5 visit this site than FISL, I will prepare a Text based and Layout based unless I know Flash which will be Flash or HTML. Cool eh? Let me think of the logistics first because I will be using same date for 2 sites.

Meanwhile new reviews coming soon. I know I have been saying that again and again, but it's true. Unfortunately, no new TVB reviews from me but there are others by others.

 Feedback please!
Permanent link  Post a Comment  2 comments

Sometimes I am so proud of myself because I achieved what I set out to do, even if it isn't exactly how I wanted it to be. Like remember that layout I posted where I said I want to make a Flash website? Well I still have no idea how but thank god for Dreamweaver because I did managed to make it look like I wanted it to be. However the downside is the entire layout will only look like how I intended it to be only if

1. you allow pop up window

2. use screen resolution of 1024 X 768. Any other resolution is just a big no-no. You can experiment since I did.

Anyway I am finishing my final touches to my Funn In Second Life revamped look, and since it is not popular at all, I can be very creative and ultimately make it very specific. Whatever your resolution may be, do have a look and give me feedback. If you can't see the entire layout, it is because of wrong screen resolution. If somehow right resolution but the links are not located where it should be, then there is a problem. I would appreciate your feedback like..

1. your screen resolution
2. how does it look on 1024 x 768. Does it look complete? Are the links where it should be? Is the laptop screen left and right instead of where it should be?
3. it is slow in loading?

For myself, I checked. I always have 1024 x 768, it looks as I wanted it to be, links are in their places, all works and the loading time is pretty fast.

The pages within the laptop itself is not finished hence the old look. I really want to know is everything fine.

Thanks for your feedback.

>> Click here. Once there click enter and a pop up window will hopefully load the layout as intended.

 Do you know?
Permanent link  Post a Comment  0 comments

Lately I have been reading about those cute bento boxes and there are some elements I like to make. I found some tools but I can't seem to find those molds use to make those cute looking eggs. You know pig face eggs, chow face eggs, or even the same molds to make the pig face rice, etc. Anyone in KL knows where I can buy these molds? Somewhere convenient? And the price? I found the tool to make those triangle rice (I think triangle Onigiri?) at those Japanese yen shop where everything is under RM5. I think the price is ok, eventhough any tips where I can find more variety and cheaper would be nice. I am also looking for those tupperware with partitians, like those bento boxes. Where ah? Your help is much appreciated.

 Start re-training your vehicles today!
Permanent link  Post a Comment  1 comments

Sometimes we need a bit of break don't we? A break from the misery of the world caused by our dependance on essential stuff and non-essential stuff. Luckily some people have such great sense of humour, they see the humour in certain crisis that can be poked fun at. Like the one below that had me laughing all the way...

FUEL PRICES ARE TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL... START RE-TRAINING YOUR VEHICLES TODAY ..!

Kinda remind me about the budget airline. Still had me chuckling even now!

Sigh... it really is very expensive. Today my claypot mee is RM1-00 more. My salary is still the same and I don't earn much at all. I believe I can cope, living like a miserable no social life kinda person but you know, I blew RM100-00 in 2 days. How? How can one cope? I want my Clinique Happy and I am thinking should I, shouldn't I. How I wish I am a multi-billionaire but no thanks to recession and inflation, I am merely a billionaire. Huge downgrade but still filthy rich. Oh how I wish I am so...

Anyway after I wrote the above I checked my email again and someone forwarded me another email about the fuel hike and these few pictures had me laughing out loud! So will you use these methods?

A preview of Kung Fu Panda
Permanent link  Post a Comment  0 comments

You all know how I hate Dreamworks animation. I hated Shrek movies, totally unmoved by Madagascar, felt Antz was boring and so colourless and of course the worst animation OF ALL TIME, Shark Tale which I hated to the core of my very deepest recesses of hatred that I am capable of. I love Pixar who can merge beautiful stories with even more beautiful animation with pop culture references that does not depend on fart/fat/race/sex/parody/spoof/whatever jokes. I went to see Kung Fu Panda, because I love Jack Black who didn't do it for in Shark Tale but I love the pictures I see from the Cannes Film Festival. For once I feel Dreamworks came out with a worthy movie of the animation kind. Kung Fu Panda had me laughing from start till finish and yet manage to inject heart and soul into a surprisingly good movie. The animation, so Asian like was superb, on part with any Pixar greats, the story may be a bit flawed at some point but it has a purpose and that is not just to spoof other movies or be smart aleck that only adults can enjoy. This one even children can enjoy without being gross out boringly desperate trying to be hip. It took me a while to get it when there's Master Oogway (he is the zen like tai chi sifu in the form of a very cool zen like old tortoise- get it, Oogway?) and of course Chogam prison. That was the best actually, I was thinking, Chogam...chogam.... and then it hit me. CHO GAM meaning BEING IN PRISON meaning prison! Brilliant! I love the characters although some given more time to develop than the others, I love the idea of a Mantis being a kung fu master which was funny!

But the best, for once are the voice acting that suits the character than just for the purpose of being there like most Dreamworks animation. Although some were unnecessary like Lucy Liu, Jackie Chan and even Angelina Jolie, anybody can play these roles but Ian McShane was chilling as Tai Lung, a Leopard I think, Jack Black as the Panda and even the guy who voiced the turtle master and the other who did the voice of Panda's father (interestingly a ermm bird?) were excellent.

But the best had to be the surprising Dustin Hoffman who usually mumbles his line but not in here. There was warmth, authority, hurt, pride, etc wrapped in a Master Shifu-ish voice and persona despite looking like a midget aka Red Panda (so cute!). I was very impressed that he was so good.

There were many beautifully rendered scenes in here that any Chinese kung fu fan would recognise, like the floating petals, still water, the "dim yuet" kung fu and many more which I totally enjoyed. The kung fu scenes were great and so exciting and so were the training scenes where Master Shifu trained Po using of all things dumplings and a pair of chopsticks! Ahhhh we know don't we? We often see chinese movies where a master or a rival challenge the other to a stand off kind of kung fu when serving tea or using chopsticks to pick up food and we have sparring using chopsticks. All here and these are the type of pop culture reference that I like to see and very smart too.

Exceedingly funny, not even Shrek could ever measure up. Watch this one in the cinema with your children. They will be laughing with you and at least you can concentrate on the movie instead of trying to figure out which movie that scene was spoofing. By the way I suspect some references were taken from Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle, some quite familiar.

Now I like Dreamworks although I could see the god awful Madagascar part II's trailer. Well you can't have it all.

I will write a proper review later.

How exactly do you spell it ... in Chinese?
Permanent link  Post a Comment  3 comments

I love watching Life, the TV series starring Damian Lewis and I remember he said that in Chinese, the way it is written with 2 women under one roof, it spells WAR. Now I asked my sis, Chinese educated and all and she just can't verify this. She just concluded, "You know Hollywood lar, they can say anything one". So I wonder, all you Chinese educated Chinese language experts here, how exactly do you spell war in Chinese? Is it in fact the character of women written twice under the character of roof? You know like Patience is a knife sticking or rather on top of the heart? Or angry means a woman between two men or is it two women between a man?

Do you know or did Life just made a fool out of me?

Anyway one quote I really liked, purportedly from Confucius quoted by Damian's character, Charlie Crews ...

"I investigate things to complete my knowledge, my complete knowledge makes my thoughts sincere, my thoughts being sincere, my heart is pure."

Very zen-ish. If you're not watching Life you must. Acting is top notch although the stories gets better as it goes along. It is the unsual characterisation that is very appealing to me. It's on every Tuesday 9pm ASTRO Ch 711 I think but it's nearing the end. So if TV shows it make sure to catch it!

The rise of the Petrol cost
Permanent link  Post a Comment  0 comments

Ridiculous considering we are oil producing nation. I still can't understand the whole thing. I received a very good email with an Excell spreadsheet whatever that will calculate your new petrol cost as opposed the old. But it works only for cars below 2000 cc since any higher than that, as the file says, you can afford it. I am considering buying a motorcycle but I don't want to die a horrible death.

Of petrol price hike to Obama
Permanent link  Post a Comment  0 comments

Petrol, now up by almost 80 cents thus RM2.70 per litre. Still cheap worldwide but shocking increase in Malaysia, starting today. Last night I desperately needed to pump petrol since near Empty and guess what? All petrol station full to the point of massive jam. Had dinner and went out to pump petrol at 9pm and got home around 10pm. If the govt intends to increase whatever, I do hope they give 3 days grace period so that everybody can pump the petrol and not rush like what it was last night. And so the extra subsidies for what I wonder? Water up, electricity up, petrol up up up and salary? SAMEEEEEE. I read subsidies will be diverted to food? Cooking oil? But my God, such a huge increase in petrol charges, surely Roti Canai now is RM1.50 instead of RM1.00? I'd rather subsidy for petrol because that is essential stuff for me. Why is the petrol prices so damn expensive when we are an oil producing country? I just don't get economics.

I also don't get this; I was watching CNN last night showing Barack Obama's speech about being a true friend to Israel and at first the way the words were flashing like "Obama Claims Victory", and people being interviewed, I actually thought the presidential race was over and Obama is now President of USA! It turns out he won the Democratic nomination after like an eternity, and yet the flashed the words Clinton won't concede and then the news that Obama declares himself as the democratic nominee and THEN the words "Presumptive Democratic Nominee Barack Obama". So is he endorsed or not endorsed by the democrats? Is he the nominee or presumptive? Presumptive until when?

And then Hillary Clinton gave her speech and declared herself also a true friend of Israel. Whilst Obama didn't look at his speech notes and gave very personalised account of his life mixed with the troubles of Israel thus making his speech entertaining as well as personal, Clinton was more professional in the sense business is business and she did look at her notes a lot. Some may question Obama's experience in politics and leading a country, I do think John F Kennedy was also not that experience and he proved himself very popular and somewhat an idealist, true? Anyway Obama gives me an impression he is a very good orator but is he a good politician? Does it matter since it is the Secretary Of State that does the real work in the politics in America? I propose and I do think if Obama wins, Clinton will and should be appointed as the Secretary of State. She has the experience and composure and I feel Obama can only benefit from her involvement rather than shooting blindly.

As I watched him talk the talk and Hillary walk the walk, I can't help but question, did his race helped him? Did Hillary's gender impede her? That isn't it as wonderful as it is frustrating that America is ready for a Black president but not a woman president? Isn't it a futile exercise that Barack Obama, as gung ho as he could be will probably never ever balance the budget and will probably be stuck with the Iraq problem as well as everything else? That despite his often repeated assurances, many will still feel he may be a closet Muslim which is nothing to be ashamed of but the implication is he may be the mole like in Infernal Affairs?

For me whoever is the next president will not have an easy ride and will take all the diplomacy to work it out and whatever the plans may be, let's face it, there are higher powers. My sympathies to McCain or Obama, whoever wins.

And if you must know, I do not think of Iraq as the unnecessary war and I do not think Bush is a war criminal akin to Hitler or Pol Pot. I genuinely believe Bush was sincere with Iraq instead about it being about increasing his retirement fund and oil and all that stuff and that Bush should have waited for Saddam to nuke his neighbour before moving in instead of a preemptive strike which was pre-emptive in so many ways. I am in the minority here I suppose and if you ask me, Clinton or Obama? I don't know. Obama or McCain? You will never know, McCain may win. After all Bush is really not as unpopular as you think he is, just because celebrities refuse to endorse him, he did in fact win the re-election despite John Kerry having all the endorsements.

I don't know. But whoever is the next president, I hope he puts a stop to this nonsensical price hike in petrol and food and stuff. If everybody dies of hunger due to these hikes, it really doesn't matter who is president because no one would be alive to be bothered.

Joyce Cheng - the epitome of grace and a daughter in the middle
Permanent link  Post a Comment  8 comments

Why daughter in the middle? Watch the interview below and you will know why. In the middle means being stuck, not necessarily between mom and dad but dad and everybody else. Thanks to Bridget for the tip on the videos, I watched it, and was busy commenting about it in the Shout Box when I thought I better comment properly in a seperate post. I have never watched Be My Guest but I felt the interviewer may have asked very hard questions, he posed it so gently that it merits an answer. Quite a good interviewer, also the guests must feel obliged to answer him since he is well kinda like their boss. He seems quite approachable. Anyway I watched the interview and it struck me as poignant and a little uncomfortable, for Joyce. She answered well, despite her Chinese not being so good but really she improved a lot. She paused when she struggled for words, mainly because of her poor vocabulary but the way she paused gives me an impression she is careful with her words without sounding like some hypocrite trying to cover her tracks. I find her honest, gracious, polite and well mannered. In her own words, she thought of herself as a complete brat when she was younger, she talked about her mother extensively and gave us insight into Lydia Shum's final moments as well as her love for her grandmother and her father. As I watched I can't help but feel whilst she would be ok, she is now quite an orphan since in her own words, she can't move in with her father since he has a family of his own and she won't take the father away from her 2 sisters. Very thoughtful lady if you ask me. But on question did almost rattled her calm composure, and that was the infamous incident of Tang Kwong Wing publicly scolding her father at the TVB memorial of her mom which I blogged about. I felt she answered well but seemed uncomfortable since she is stuck in the middle; one hand her father, another hand everybody else. She did explained why Adam Cheng was not at the funeral I think held in Canada but I felt it was more defensive of her father than offering a believable explanation. She probably didn't want to hurt her aunties and uncles and yet felt obliged to defend her father who is still under fire by giving probably the worst excuse for not attending the funeral of your ex-wife; he was working and taking 3 days off would halt productions. I am sure TVB would allow him to go so her excuse sounded quite hollow. Understandably why she had to defend him so I felt for her. She also spoke about her father's involvement in her life and she did took some of the blame that was targetted at her father and she ended the discussion quite tactfully when she said they have been divorced for 20 years so she had never thought her father not attending the funeral as a problem. Good answer that one. And interestingly, the interviewer, Stephen Chan (what is his designation in TVB anyway?) stopped the question there, not going any further so I thought he was being very thoughtful with her struggle to explain the estrangement of her father and the rest of her mother's friends.

One thing I did notice though was a very revealing observation by Joyce. She didn't say it but I understood it as it is. Stephen asked did Adam ever visited Lydia at the hospital and Joyce said he had intention to do so but Joyce advised him not to because everytime someone visited Lydia she would even at her weakest self try to look her best, more so at an ex-husband? Because if Adam were to visit Lydia at the hospital, she would spend hours making herself look good, a habit she would not break for a friend more so her ex-husband. I find this very revealing; perhaps Lydia was still in love with Adam, after all these years. I think Stephen did asked her about this but I can't remember there was a straight answer from Joyce.

She also revealed how angry she was at her mother who always criticised her during her practice for a performance as she felt she was never good enough in her mother's eyes and yet Lydia would be the first to give her the highest praise after a performance. You could feel she was extremely close to her mom and her loss must be devastating.

Overall it was a tearful emotional revealing interview which at times felt quite uncomfortable as I thought Joyce is being forced to take sides when she tries not to. I find her gracious, polite (always a thank you whenever the waiter put food on the table) whilst tearful, she was celebrating her mother's memory as it should be. Those few moments when she was adopting accents and acting out other people's reactions, I felt she has what it takes to be an actress if not an entertainer. And like I always said, I am very sure a job is waiting for her at TVB, all she needs to do is just show up.

Have a watch. For other videos, Bridget gave me the username of the person posting all these interviews to which you can watch to your heart's content.

Part 5

I wonder did anyone transcribed or transcript or whatever you call it this or any other Be My Guest interviews? Because I know non-Chinese watch these also so you may not understand what they were saying. If no I can do it because you will hardly find the artistes as revealing as they could be in these interviews even if the interviews may be a year old or so.

The winner of Britain's Got Talent 2008 IS ...
Permanent link  Post a Comment  2 comments

OH MY GOD! GEORGE SAMPSON!!! I thought he and Andrew Johnston and even Kate & Gin got fair chances and George, who repeated his Singing In The Rain routine with different moves won! It was such a great moment to see him win, almost speechless and Signature, at no. 2 was very gracious and Andrew Johnston was no. 3 and he cried because I suspect of disappointment but hey no. 3 amongst thousands and thousands ain't that bad! I am sure he will get a record deal. George won $100,000-00 (pounds by the way) and a place to perform in probably the biggest event in England, before Prince Charles! I wonder will he do the same routine again? Who knows eh? So happy for him. Here is the winning announcement and his repeat performance at the end ...

Singature repeated their first audition too but with more moves and more dances. Excellent stuff but getting tiring you know...

I will post Andrew Johnston's moment when I find it.

Truth be told the 1st I searched after George's video was Kate and her amazing wonder dog, Gin. I thought she should have got second or third place although I did predicted Kate and Gin could win this. Here their performance incorporated everything we have seen and my god, this dog can even go gostan in circles! Amazing dog, amazing trainer, amazing video, a pity didn't win top 3!

But hey, George deserves it totally! CONGRATULATIONS GEORGE SAMPSON! It's true; never give up! Never surrender!

 My proposed new layout
Permanent link  Post a Comment  2 comments

It took me sometime to figure out how to do it. I wanted the look of my desktop table but since the real one is really cluttered, that would be impossible. I found a lot of Flash templates that fulfilled the look I want, such as an opened book on a table with pens and other stuff but those cost USD59 at least and frankly I refused to pay. So I searched for tutorials and found some amazing Photoshop tutorials that helped me in my quest. I feel so proud of myself, because to me it looks good. So the following is my proposed new layout of my website, have a look by clicking the thumbnail:-

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

I will need to put that in a specific pop up window so that the layout won't be screwed up. Then I will have to figure out how to insert the codes. I could do it the Flash way which will be awesome but I won't because I can't because after reading so many tutorials I still don't get it, so in the end it will be the traditional HTML and DHTML and of course iframes and all. That too I have to figure out how. And of course I may change an item or two there, maybe add some crumbled papers, paperclips, some food, water and what nots, then it will look like my desktop. Maybe I'll leave that for my The Storytellers website, now renamed The Author Story because I intend to buy a domain name for it. That one I want an open book, and it would be best if I could flip it but again, ahhhhhh Flash ahhhhh the reason why I can never be a professional web designer.

Anyway look at that beautiful new layout eh? I went mad with the colour burning and stuff. I love the scroll, I love the tape, I love the MP3 player. I wanted even to put in my Sony Ericsson Z610 phone but then I thought no purpose to put that and no use.

What do you think?

TV NOW
So what's on TV these days? With so many Asian channels on ASTRO, it would be appropriate to compile a list here for your reference. Here is a list of Asian shows being broadcast via ASTRO Malaysia in the prime time slot which includes local terrestrial channels. More info below.
MORE INFO

The number indicated next to the channel title is the ASTRO channel number and the time is Malaysian time (+8.00GMT).

Titles with means there are reviews for this title in our database. Check the relevant section for the said reviews.

The list includes productions from China [Ch], Singapore [Sg], Malaysia [Mas], Taiwan [Tw], Korea [Kr], Japan [Jp]

Some channels are dedicated channels meaning for example WLT [Ch 311], TVB8 [Ch 311] and TVB9 [Ch 311} broadcasts 100% TVB productions which will include series produced somewhere else but the rights bought by TVB, HDD [Ch 333] which broadcasts Taiwanese productions in 100% Fujian/Hokkien dialect, which will sometime include shows that were dubbed into the said dialect and KBS [Ch 322] which broadcasts Korean productions which will include foreign productions dubbed into Korean. Since KBS is a production house, I can only assume the series broadcasts will be exclusively KBS productions unless KBS bought the rights to broadcast the respective titles.

Titles where its origin is not indicated means it is HKTVB production.

D means is dubbed, DL means Dual Language, M means Mandarin, K means Korean, C means Cantonese and E means English.

So if you see ... (a) Title A [Kr][D-DL-CM] in WLT [Ch 311], it means Title A is a Korean series broadcast in Wah Lai Toi (TVB) channel where you'll find it is a 100% dubbed series with dual language where Cantonese is the prime language and Mandarin the 2nd language. Yes, even if it is a Korean series some channels may completely dub over it with 2 language choices. (b)Title A [Kr] in KBS [Ch 322], it means this Title A is a Korean series broadcast over at KBS channel and it offers only one language that is its language of origin, Korean with not alternative choice of language since it is not Dual Language. (c) Title A [Kr][D-M], it means Title A is a Korean series which has been completely dubbed into Mandarin. It also means there will not be any original language since it has been dubbed over. (d) Title A [Kr][DL-KC], it means Title A is a Korean series which offers dual language choice, Korean being the prime language with Cantonese as the dubbed version. Hence you won't see D as in Dubbed in i
