A Quick Word : TVB's The No No Girl

Print/Download PDF/Email Post a comment 0 comments

I am watching and am enjoying TVB's answer to K-romance series, The No No Girl. In fact IT IS K DRAMA minus the youth. We have a bumbling, supposedly unattractive but very very kind and nice girl who goes along with the hero, a hero who is in suits and is a super chaebol and his assistant who perpetually has  a jacket over her shoulder but never actually wears it properly. So many scenes reminds me like this is a K romance that for a moment I thought Gong Hyo Jin, queen of K romance will jump in and Cha Seung Won is there as the super cool super chaebol with abssssss. No, in their place, we have ... is it still Nnadia Chan? I actually forgotten her name until I remembered Chan Chung Ling who looks lovely and acts the part well. A lot of miscast apart from the leads though. But the casting of Eddie Cheung is to me an inspired choice. Never thought of him as sexy or rich looking but here he is, super rich and super sexy. Also typical K romance hero except he's wayyyyyy nicer to the leading lady. Anyway he actually looks physically great. Must have pumped iron and all. He really looks good! And a missed moment was when he woke up in the morning, would have been perfect if h woke up naked. Why not eh?

Yes this is TVB's answer to K romance and so they basically lifted everything from K romance from silly settings to cliche romantic scenes to guy in a suit, girl with jacket over shoulder, bumbling lovable heroine.. except they amped up the age by 2 decades which is ok to me and instead of super chaebol's son, they have the super chaebol himself as the hero. And why not? Super chaebol can marry anyone but the son must marry for amalgamation of 2 big companies.

I like it, cliche or not but it will only feel fresh to those who has never seen a K romance before. Those who have seen it and love every one of them will probably think The No No Girl is a waste of time. Frankly, so far, episode 4, some scenes are questionable, and  not exactly well written or consistent but at least it is a bit light hearted. Leads are well cast so I am enjoying them though I am annoyed with the heroine-meets-super chaebol-and-goes-hiccup. Seen it in TVB all the time, we need another way to express her surprise. What about vomiting? Not that romantic though...

I like the actors next to the secondary roles as in the hotel employees and they all look terribly familiar, uniform or not and then I remember I watched hotel employees scene in Roger Kwok's Dead Wrong.

And I like the actor playing Richmond's son but I feel he is terribly badly cast.

Are you watching this series? Does it remind you of K romance or at least T romance?

Oh it makes me want to watch either The City Hall (with similar characters, as in low self esteem woman and very confident man) or Master's Sun (with a low self esteem woman and a very confident man) or Greatest Love (with low self esteem woman and... wait....are they ALL the same?!).

Believe me, 1 year down the road, there will be a Goblin - ish storyline. Not to say K drama is great but give me Cha Seung Won any time. That man is made for super confident super sexy super chaebol roles.

But Eddie Cheung is like quite close.. man that guy is super sexy in here and he does  nothing but walk in suits, smirk nicely and the rest as expressionless super capable dude. Why I find him so sexy?

P/S in case you are wondering what's this series is about, so far.. it is about a middle aged single woman who is forever unlucky in love and who is in love with love and is pining for a guy who she thinks she can never get but she did for one night 7 years ago and he forgotten who she was. My guess is this is gonna go K drama route; she is pitiful but earnestly pitiful and he feels pity for her and them empathy and then like and finally love her. Minus all the pushing, dragging her along, scolding her, screaming at her, and maybe no hot kisses. And TVB may give her a third party which I hope not. Would like the singular love story for this one.

Webe ... no Webe ... and idiotic warning

I seriously was changing to Maxis but was stopped because of account creation issue and need to wait for Maxis to do whatever it is which to me is as simple as canceling my account so I can just reregister. Not sure what's so damn complicated. So I am waiting but not happily or eagerly when today, just now, I received an email from Webe which says I will get 3 months free 1GB mobile tethering and will be activated in a few days time. Am I happy?

No.

First, 1GB is pittance. And on careful reading, they now have 500MB for RM8 per month.

Oh dear lord! 500mb FOR RM8 PER MONTH?! Come on! Special deal for TM users. Give us 1GB for RM5 per month. I am a unifi user!

And yes, in my office, connection is off and on and off and on. Couldn't post using twitter right now because NO CONNECTION for hours until suddenly got connection and then connection died. It's like a slumbering dragon. As and when the dragon likes.

But hey, I am not happy with Maxis' technicality too. Everything in Malaysia is 3 WORKING DAYS. They really need to learn from Swanson Vitamins where I can immediately amend an already confirmed order via Chat Online, just like that. As long as no credit card charged.

11.04.2017
I jumped on the bandwagon of Webe, the new telco in town because I am a long time user of Unifi and I liked unlimited data and unlimited call within my budget which is really high anyway. Everything in Malaysia is expensive so if the plan is a RMxxx amount, some might think it's ok, more so RMxx. Just 1 month into the experience, I will be damned. I am changing telco. I used to be with Digi for a very long time but back in those days their data plan was not great. So I changed to Maxis because my place then had no Unifi so I needed a plan where I can use the data that comes with a device sharing thing. Hey I am not very technology savvy in terms of TERMS. Anyway when Unifi was available, I changed to Umobile but the data seems to be like water poured away. These were back when these telcos had yet to change their data plan offerings. Then I changed to Celcom and survived on 5GB per month until I upgraded to the 20GB per month plan at almost the same price and I was pretty ok with it except out of KL or inside buildings, even in restaurants, absolutely no line. So I guess I knew why 5GB works for me because there's no line.

Then came a call just a 1 month ago by Webe, latest stuff offering to TM Unifi users and a price that is even cheaper than my Celcom and with better offering. I took it because it suits me. I am more data user than call person. Of course Webe people told me out of KL, Celcom is the network used but never mind, I can live with it. First few days, connection was good. Not fast but it's there and I am from those streamyx years where I can remember the modem dialing. For me, if it is unlimited, I can wait for whatever to download.

However as time goes by, I realise there are any blind spots that Webe doesn't cover or if it does, the connection is simply not stable. Like right now. I wanted to post something on Instagram, 10 minutes ago there's data, 10 minutes later, none. It goes on and off, and it is irritating, especially I like to listen to online radio and it keeps getting interrupted by dis and re connection. That I can't take. But never mind, this is someone who used Celcom for a very long time and can survive.

The deal breaker though is Webe doesn't allow mobile tethering or mobile hotspot. Had to pay. I understand the logic, because it is unlimited, you don't want people abusing that and congesting the line and whatever. But come to think of it, I am a heavy data user not because of my phone.

For my computer, or downloading anything seriously heavy, I have Unifi. When Unifi is down and it will be down sometimes (such as when electricity is out, poof, no Unifi), I rely on my phone's mobile tethering to use my Ipad. I don't use Ipad to download heavy stuff, but to watch youtube videos, surf, read news, etc. Celcom suited me fine and if I had kept within 5GB all these years, it meant I survived on 5GB for my mobile tethering too. I don't need to share my line at all, just me. It becomes even more obvious when I got my Nintendo Switch which relies on Wifi to access the Eshop and news and potentially download games. I won't  be so foolish to use mobile plan to download XX or XXXGB games, that's for Unifi but at least I need the wifi to connect to Nintendo to do some system updating which is of very reasonable amount in terms of GB. Less than GB in fact or even check out their eshop with exclusive videos. Won't take much. And that happened the other day and I reached for my phone when Unifi connection near my computer was not strong enough for my Switch since I had to move closer to the router for that and I was lazy and guess what? All the unlimited data in the world and I can't even share it WITH MYSELF. No tethering, and I remembered that and I threw my phone on the bed, took up my Switch and moved outside towards the router.

So so silly.

One time also in a restaurant and Webe has no mobile data, and I had to "borrow" data from my sis' phone (using Digi) and hers is a meagre 2GB and still I can use because I just wanted to post the damn food picture to my instagram.

Very very frustrating.

It is either got line but can't use or no line AND no use. It is almost like Celcom but at least Celcom has tethering and when there's connection, in my house especially and when Unifi is having temper tantrums or childish fits, I can at least reach for my phone, switch it on and then use my Ipad through wifi. Not all have super eyesight and can live with a 5.7 inches screen, even if mine is 6 inches by the way. I told my friend about Webe and her first reaction was "What? Can't share with MY OWN devices? What's the point?".

And that is the deal breaker for me. When Unifi is down, and I am in my house, and I want to see some stuff on a bigger screen, I can't. Maybe a workaround is mirroring with my TV or Ipad but that's just so darn slow.

I have written to Webe suggesting why not allow for XXGB allocation for each account for tethering. Not like they need the cash for the tethering. No worries on anyone using it instead of Unifi if you cap it and no one will try to illegally hack it somehow. But no news. No business acumen on seeing that far away. Webe assumes we have one device, period or with unlimited data and tethering, we will go around becoming hotspot for everyone. There are perfectly selfish people like me who just wants to share amongst my own devices, especially my Ipad and my Switch and my laptop when damn Unifi is down. And capping or allotting some data per month for each account will be the perfect answer. I can even deal with the constant disconnection, because nothing is perfect. Or charge a min fee of RM5 for additional RM5GB cap or something per month (instead of the per 2 hours rate right now), I can deal with that since it is still cheaper than Maxis and I support Unifi.

But nope. No news. Am frustrated and tired and angry.

I am now looking whether to go back to Celcom because the data plan is good due to Anyday GB plan which I love or Maxis because I read that they're most stable and connection everywhere even if it is expensive for the terms they offer. I can live with 10GB per month, I lived with 5GB for a long time as long as I can tether. I think I can and will put up with inconveniences such as price and limited GB.

Still thinking but am losing patience.

P/S am also very angry that I just got a notice from governmental department, some Pharmacy division warning me my health supplements I bought from USA is illegal but let go this time if not I can be in jail and fined because they see me as importing goods. How stupid is that? Malaysia sells highly overpriced vitamins but even then, they don't have specialised vitamins. Am I to register a license so that I can "import" vitamins for my own use? Due to DHL, I usually buy 6 months supply. I guess that's why I was finally "caught" after... 3 years of buying the same way. Already Malaysian Ringgit is shitty as against USD hence the price keeps getting higher but now I get that idiotic notice. I read in their website that 1 month supply is ok and that's like 1 bloody bottle. If it is for personal consumption and can't find the brand in Malaysia, why not allow us? Singapore has a shop selling that particular brand but not Malaysia. I mean as long as the item is below RM500, let us be. No one will import RM500 health supplement as a seller because that's too low. Logic dictates it is for personal consumption and therefore I am not buying to sell for profit, and it is not banned substances (is spirulina banned? Of course not! But you can buy the same in Malaysia for double and triple the price!), free economics people. Let us buy within higher limit for personal use! I don't get Malaysia. We are so backward in everything. I researched alternatives and it will triple my expenses for brands I don't even care for. I love my current brand but because of some warning- notices- happy officers, I am now warned. It just feels so ridiculously stupid that I am asked to register the product, apply for license FOR PERSONAL CONSUMPTION! If I can buy that brand here in Malaysia for twice the price, I will do it! That's my country, one with policies that burdens the people like myself who simply wants to buy affordable preferred branded health supplements so we can be healthier. I don't even care if I get taxed GST of 6%, plus maybe personal consumption tax of 10% or whatever the hell you call it as long as it is for products under RM500 or whatever. I read that notice again and I see red. Because the paper is red or pinkish but also because it is such a stupid notice to be issued to obviously someone who buys for own consumption. No one buys 4 bottles of the same thing to sell. Or 4 x 4x4x4 for various pills. 4 bottles each is obviously own consumption. Go get the Ebay sellers.

Oh I am so pissed off. Shall need to think 6 months later what to do. I read some even get the warning for 4 bottles of the same thing. Our civil service has too many papers, pink slips for that matter.

Help me. Help me with the insane illogical logic here.

REVIEWS
I was ready to sink this series, and for the 1st 5 or so episodes where usually it will tell you whether to continue or to abandon ship, I was ready to abandon ship not because it was boring but because the storyline was disconnected or independent of one another. But I stuck with it, I persevered and as it went by, I have to say, this ship not only sailed, but it sailed fine and smooth. In the end it was one of the most pleasant journey for me, and definitely one of the best TVB series in recent years which actually had a good ending. In fact I really love the last ending scene.

Now for the long opinion.

By the way, this isn't a disappointment like Dead Wrong and I think there are some similarities with Black Heart White Soul except the ending of Black Heart White Soul was quite interesting and different.

REVIEW
I can give you my very short opinion on this series. It started slow, picked up in the middle, ended satisfyingly but not perfectly. In short, this is like a performance driven non-story no-conflict no-drama series where every performance averages from good to star in the making except if your name is Sharon Chan. Seriously, one of the best series for 2017 thus far and its scale is in the vein of House of Spirits where it is a small intimate series.

And now for the long one.

Don't get me wrong. I am really enjoying this show, especially Kevin's story but it is so snail paced as to what's the connection with KKK and too much on each Ks that I am wondering where is this heading and will the balance of the episodes convince me of the love between Kristal-Kevin as it would with the cuteness overload that is between Kevin and Wong Sir? I mean Kevin and Wong Sir is the real pair here.

Still a bit lost as to KKK connection where all 3 Ks have yet to meet. But it is funny how Kevin actually hoped to get fired or hand in his resignation after what happened but Wong Sir won't have it. He made a deal with a very jubilant Kevin; Kevin is to be a mole in a cheating/fraud case involving developers and housing developments and Kevin was so happy to know he is still a cop and he can legitimately do renovation company work (like how his brother did where he helped his brother before he became a cop) and keep 2 salaries! It is a small case anyway but Kevin proves himself street smart and got close to one of the bigger guns played by Oscar Leung. Funny how "lucky" he is because Oscar knows the violent dude from 2 years ago, that robbery case! But Kevin doesn't know yet.

Meanwhile King Kong meets his friends again (and interestingly played by Louis Yuen, didn't expect him and he sports a rather bad China Cantonese accent) and his friends are cheats aka run in front of cars, feign accident, claim compensation.

Then there's Kristal and daughter and husband still snapping at each other.

So far, KKK not meeting one another yet. I find Kevin's story interesting, Kristal's ok but don't get what's King Kong for.

Better fast fast move on because series is dangerously being stagnant plot wise.

I spent 2 hours of my life that I am not getting back watching a series that doesn't know its own direction, more so its destination, going nowhere and like its Chinese title, 迷, that is literally Lost. Or is it Riddle? Confusion? I will go with Google Translate. It's lost from episode 1.

What I am definitely NOT watching

Print/Download PDF/Email Post a comment 3 comments

In case you are curious, I am DEFINITELY NOT watching TVB's Burning Hands.  I love Ruco Chan but I won't spend a minute watching a series populated with actresses I do not like and having Ruco having a look that I do not feel very attractive and a topic I do not care about. So that's that. I am definitely NOT watching Burning Hands.

Interestingly I could no longer continue with the last 15 episodes or so of Princess Wei Young. I realise that series is same story told a million times within the same series. There is no real anger, no real purpose, no real sense of getting anywhere at all. It is just heroine gets tortured, hero saves her, the end. And I skipped and in the end the hero died saving her and bless her, she got burdened with looking after his "house" aka his kingdom. It's about 2 people who can't take care of anything themselves but ended up taking care other people's stuff. However, the acting is seriously good and whilst the villains are terrible, you can't help but pity them. You know what, I will do a review for whatever spot I stopped at. I just couldn't go on with a series where no one ever EVER sweats even when they're poisoned, imprisoned, tortured, hurt and in feverish pain. Not one drop of sweat.

I wanted to watch When A Snail Falls In Love because I like the morose sulky looking lead actor, Wang Kai but the idea of watching a snail falling in love amidst murder cases is not very appealing to me. It's as if he can't fall in love outside of his work force because he's too lazy to look. And I made the mistake of skipping to the end where they kissed passionately and it was one of the worst kisses I have ever seen. For this, C Dramas must learn from K Dramas on the art of kissing. I might still watch when I had nothing to watch. So this is not definite.

I am watching Saimdang which is getting on my nerves. Lee Young Ae is heavenly but I can't stand the flashback of a mind time travel of a flashback within a flashback concept. I am confused. So do make up your bloody mind; is this Bu Bu Jing Xin or is this just  a story within a story told from ... Saimdang's perspective but why is it showing everyone's perspective? Why is a university lecturer watching laundry for professor? Is Korea that bullying culture? Why isn't Korean authorities banning such negative portrayal and yet they punish those who spread rumours and dodge taxes? If I work in Korea does it mean I have to make kim chis to please everyone when I am there as a professional? What kind of a bullying society is this?! If Lee Young Ae gets it that way, what more for mere mortal like me??

I am also watching TVB's Tiger Moms which is enjoyable except;

a. I hate the boring proper subdue nice gentle Sharon Chan's character. If her son is getting flak for her dual role, for god sake, quit as Disciplinary teacher!

b. why are all the men such wusses?

c. can we have a real teenage rebel  in the younger daughter.. Echo issit? Wow, now we have Venus and Echo. Is there any better indication on what they will become? Venus will be embroiled in dating which mom disapproves and Echo will stop listening to mom, since everything mom says is just echooooooooo...

I might watch the new Kevin Cheng series because I have nothing else to watch.

And I am tired of waiting for Cha Seung Won to come up with a new TV series. He's busy doing absolutely nothing but modeling, ads and now fan meeting in Japan. Where is the new TV series? Let's not talk about movies. They're nothing. I want TV dramas. I now need to fall back on Hwajeong because I miss him on TV but come on Chajumma!! Where's your next TV Drama?!??

ANDDDD I am waiting for Fukuyama Masaharu's Scoop movie which I learn got a blurry love scene at the end. Wow, the man has matured as an actor! And I am still wondering what's his baby's gender.

As for Wallace Huo, well I may have to suffer Zhou Xun to watch him and gorgeous costumes in Ruyi's Royal Love In The Palace. Which made me think, maybe TVB can rent these same costumes as second hand costumes for their Ruco Chan's mega series on He Shen instead of using their 10th hand costumes which looks absolutely worn out. And don't give me the BS that He Shen is not married or in love with one of the emperor's (old or young, don't care) concubine. I will scream.

So, what are you watching?

The love and dread of living alone

Print/Download PDF/Email Post a comment 2 comments

I have just made a huge step in my life, quite late in life. I've just co-bought an apartment in a 5 storey walk up.. apartment. It's not much, but in Malaysia, especially in the city, whilst it is out of the way of the city, it is considered a very very good buy. I visited the place, I walked up 5 storeys to have a look and I fell in love with the view and the idea of it. It is a new development but already built so that takes away any anxiety of developer running away with my money and not completing the place. There's some landscaped area nearby, in a predominantly chinese area. The entire place, the secluded area feels like Wayward Pines to me. That's why it feels like Wayward Pines; it felt like a world of its own. Everyone buying these probably buys to stay because I don't see any investment value per se. The one I bought, well actually co bought because I can't afford the entire place myself is the top floor. In western world, top floors mean penthouse right? In Malaysia, the higher the floor, the cheaper, mainly because this is 5 storey walk up meaning no lift. So I have to exercise a bit. I wanted the lower floor, maybe 4th or 3rd floor but unfortunately only top floors left. What is great about top floor i the view of the city or surrounding area and the fact that directly in front of my place is double storey houses which means.. definite unobstructed view like forever. The layout is very nice, using every space and it is 933sf with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Of course the demo house was perfectly arranged so my eventual house probably looks less than that. Quite frankly I can't afford to renovate it or do some major decoration so it will be quite bare. And I told my family I ain't moving there until much much much later; since I need to save up for furniture and all.

But it is an exciting prospect for me because it means I am living alone for the first time in my adult life. And that's when the worry comes in, The cost, the loan, the bills, the idea of alone in a house. My brother and his family will be living next door to me but in my place, I am alone. Sometimes even in my own room alone I get a bit jumpy over every sound, every crash. You know what I mean? Now I will be totally alone. But I feel at some point we will be alone in our lives and we must learn to live with it.

Anyone living alone, any advice? To just appease my fear?

But the cost is really an issue. I will live not too far but still quite a driving distance from my family home. So it means extra cost because food wise, I can't be having dinners at home anymore. Need to wash my own clothes, clean my own place. It feels so daunting.

Not to mention walking up 5 storeys. I calculated that as in I thought about it; it gives me the exercise I need. Seriously.

I wonder though.. can I keep a pet?

Update... boo hoo. Not allowed to keep DOGS by local council. All else is fair game.

True! true!!

Latest info.

Frightening.

Media and economists predict that in less than a month from now, Malaysia will fall into a state where:

Factories, Shops, and even entire Government Departments would be closed!

The Stock Market would also stop trading. Price hikes will be everywhere.

Families and businesses will post signs and messages on the doors to announce closures.

Households would have started stockpiling food some days earlier..

Adults would be drinking and gambling all day...

Young children will be running around asking for money.

The streets would be filled with remnants of explosives and gunpowder. Lions will be set free to roam from house to house. .

The entire country would appear to be in the midst of a collapse.

Some might call this an Economic Crisis, but in Malaysia we call this period......

AN ODE TO TVB

Oh TVB,
You are so dead to me now.

Series after series,
churned out months after months,
when I thought one series was still ongoing,
alas it has ended and new one has begun.

Yet, yet I do not switch to the new series,
for I see another undesirable pairing,
or an undesirable actor,
who I knew my heart will never carry any torch,
as they won't carry the series itself.

My heart yearns for a good series,
to sink my teeth into,
to recap every night like how I did years before...

It was more than a year
before I posted a new review
for a current series
that fired my desire to have an opinion and share it

But now am back to square one.

To be fair..

I feel no desire to write a review for K dramas, C dramas, J dramas, any drama
because only TVB series spurs me on to write
my feelings,
to bear my soul,
and my heart
for my fellow netizens to read

Maybe might write for a K drama
but rarely so
for paragraphs of bashing is now for TVB alone
heart sick as I am
I see no better alternatives

I stopped obsessing over TVB
Stopped accepting mediocrity

Am now hoping for that one series
where I will feel like having
my fingers tap dance on the keyboard again
An episodic thoughts perhaps
A full review perhaps
Nightly opinion perhaps

I've lost my patience waiting
Same like how my fellow readers have lost patience waiting for me

TVB,
you will never die
I lied.
You are still alive to me.

But will you regain that special place in my heart

Will you?
Could you?

When?

REVIEW
The title is so apt. As I was watching this series (purely for Ruco Chan), my hand formed into a fist and I found myself punching all 4 walls, purely out of frustration. This series won Best Series in TVB Awards and I feel it was the popular choice but it was the wrong choice. The best series of the year was House of Spirits and it wasn't for its performances or story. It was for consistency in the story and performances.

What A Fist Within Four Walls lack is consistency in absolutely everything. Character, pacing, storytelling, focus, ending. It focused on A and ended on B when A was the more interesting story.

REVIEW
You know, I'm quite fascinated with how TVB is these days. They want to be different, they try to be different, they do different things but infuriatingly, everything different leads to the same old thing before they try to want and do different things. The changes are superficial, in the end they stick to the usual "die hard fans say winning but disillusioned fans say what winning" formula. Fact is ratings are generally down on all fronts. To be fair, tech savvy people these days just watch online, download torrent, they don't hug the TV anymore, and they can record the shows to watch later, which I somehow feel does not count towards the ratings.

I have abandoned TVB for a long time or shall I say TVB abandoned us all by being stubbornly same old stuff. Then I read about Dead Wrong and it has Roger Kwok and some story about him being marooned on an island and he wanted revenge and I thought, well this time, TVB will get it right.

When it debuted, I watched, religiously all episodes and in the end, I can conclude that I like some parts of it, I dislike some parts of it, but overall, my emotional attachment to TVB does not make me say I love Dead Wrong because I don't. On a deeper level of my emotional self, as I asked myself, "Funn, do you love this series?" and I will zenly say "If love is hate, I love it so". No, I don't hate it either. It's just that it was just a series that went through the motions of a story that is not very well written and with some different stuff thrown into it to package it differently but open it up, lo and behold it's same!

But let's just go through the motions shall we?

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2017
