I have read many official statements from official people about tragic events but I have never read such utter nonsense. First the tragic event:-

A grandmother's life support machine was switched off by doctors before her two sons could say goodbye because of 'tight resources', her husband claimed last night...Doctors told her husband Shun-Yuen Pang there was nothing they could do to save her, and as she lay unconscious two of her three sons took the first plane from Hong Kong to Britain. However, before they arrived doctors are alleged to have told Mr Pang that they would switch the life support machine off because of 'tight resources'. The grandfather begged them to keep the system on for one more day so that his sons Ka-Chun, 37, and Ka-Hing, 35, could see their mother for one last time. But Mr Pang, a museum security officer who served in the British Army, claims his pleas were dismissed. His wife died shortly after the machine was turned off and their sons arrived hours later...He said: 'My sons phoned me from Hong Kong and said they had got immediate flights and were on their way, they told me to stop them switching off the machine. 'The doctor on the ward asked me if her relatives were nearby because we didn't have much time and they were going to switch off the ventilator. 'The doctor said "We have to switch it off", I said that it would just take 12 hours, but the doctor kept emphasising the tight resources. 'I repeatedly said that if he was talking about another patient who needs the ventilator then I am quite prepared to see you switch it off and move her, but if not then please leave her on, her sons are coming to see her one last time. 'But the doctor said they would switch it off in 30 minutes. 'I said that I did not agree that the machine should be switched off.' ... Later the couple's sons arrived from Hong Kong, distraught they were too late to say goodbye. He said: 'My sons wanted to see her one last time but when they did she was cold and being pulled out from the mortuary.'

And the official statement? Try not to choke on whatever you're eating right now ...

A spokesman for King's College Hospital said: 'We would like to extend our sympathies to Mr Pang and his family at this difficult time. We are sorry to hear that he has concerns about the care his wife received at King's. We are encouraging the family to contact us directly so that we can discuss his concerns in more detail. 'It would be inappropriate for us to comment in detail on the specifics of Mrs Pang's case. 'However, we would like to make it clear that the reason his wife's life support was withdrawn was that senior doctors had judged that recovery was not possible because of the severity of her injuries. This was explained fully to Mr Pang at the time. In cases where life support for a patient may be withdrawn, senior doctors are always involved in this aspect of their care.'Life support is only removed when senior doctors are certain that recovery is not possible, and family members are kept fully informed at each stage of the decision-making process.'

This is like the case of chicken and duck talk. What the husband said was just to wait a few more hours so that the grandsons can come from HK to London to say a last farewell. What the doctors are saying is it is best to switch off the machine when recovery is not possible. For heaven's sake, we are talking a 12 hour window here. Can't they just bloody wait? If resources is so tight, charge the 12 hour electricity bill on the hospital. God knows hospital bills are already sky high anyway, what is a few thousand more? How unkind, how cruel. But then if the living are treated with complete disregard, more so the soon to be dead. What sort of nonsense the official statement is. Absolute and utter nonsense.
